Hiring and paying down payment to Marseille Franch Tour Guide

I was referred to a tour guide by a guide mentioned by Rick Steves in his Provence guidebook. We communicated via email and he did a great job presenting information and tour suggestions. Based on this, I sent him an email to book the tour. He emailed his pro forma contract and instructions to wire 50% of the tour fee (several hundred dollars) to his bank with the balance due on the date of the tour. I emailed him back to see if I could pay by credit card but have not heard back. Is this typical? Do French tour guides generally require down payment by wire?

I have not been able to find any information on this tour guide or his company on the internet. This, combined with the request for wired funds, is a little concerning. Thx!

Try using toursbylocals.com. You can pay with credit card and they are a very reputable company. We have used them in several cities throughout Europe

It is not uncommon for Europeans to make deposits by wire. Far more common than in the US. Cannot judge if the request is reasonable. You must be booking a large group to have a deposit that high.

Or, you can drop a dime and call him on the phone. It's not an expensive call from the US and you get to actually talk with him.

No real reason to shy away from the requested payment method, and, as Frank points out, it sounds like a sizeable group so it's not unusual that he would want a significant deposit. You are impressed by the guide, along with RS, why not use him?
