Hiking trails from Chamonix

I had been intending to hike to Lac Blanc this summer, but the Flégère lift is now out of service until December, which I believe puts that out of the question. I haven’t had much success locating good information (read: a thorough book) on the hiking options in the area, but that trail had looked very appealing. I’m wondering about your experiences with other similar trails that we could check out instead. I really liked the alpine views and beauty of the lake that I thought we would get. Something moderately strenuous, as the kids will be along. (Kids who have good hiking experiences, mind you.)

No lake, but the hike From Plan de l'aiguille to Montenvers on the other side of the valley is a good one. Shorter than Lac Blanc as it's a one way, and mostly downhill. It's called Grand Balcon Nord.

Are you going up to the Aguille du Midi? If so there is a small lake you can hike to.
On the way up to the Aguille du Midi you make two stops and change gondolas. At the second one there is a small lake. Once you get off the gondola, face the mountain. If you look left you will see a trail winding down and along the front of the ridge. If you follow it, you'll come to a lake. People swim in it (brrrrr) and it's very rocky but it would be a doable hike with kids. Not very far but still nice!
Too bad you can't get to Lac Blanc...it's a stunning place! Some other time hopefully. One of my favorite hikes in all of the alps.
