Should we start in Riquewihr or Ribeauvillé? Is one direction more downhill than the other? Thanks!
Ribeauvillé’s town center has the lowest elevation but its 3 castles are uphill from the town. The elevation difference between the towns is not significant enough to be concerned about starting at one end or the other. Hunawihr town is slightly hilly.
Riquewihr is tiny and quickly gets crowded with tourist-bus visitors by mid-day. So. if you can, it’s smart to start off in the early morning in Riquewihr and then make your way toward Hunawihr and then Ribeauville through the vineyard hiking trails that are open to the public.
We hiked all the way from Ribeauville to Hunawihr, Riquewihr and then Kaysersberg and back to Ribeauville all in one afternoon and it was fantastic. Down by Kaysersberg we saw parapets and rampart fortifications of towns we never knew the names of before visiting.
We walked from Hunawihr to Ribeauvillé and back. I’ll say the walk was rolling hills. In Hunawihr we parked for free at the Naturoparc, walked over to the Mixed Church of Hunawihr before walking to the next town. In Ribeauvillé we walked around, then stopped for a drink and pastry before heading back.
We didn’t stop in Riquewihr because we couldn’t find a parking spot, free or pay. Every parking place was occupied.
