Help with accommodation choices

Would love some assistance. We are travelling to Paris in a couple weeks with a large family including young children. I am down to two Airbnb and looking for recommendations. One is at rue d'enghien in the 10th and the other is rue lamarck in the 18th.

Thanks so much.

welcome to the forum jezzarose. What specific feedback do you want? Without some context it's pretty difficult to respond. If you only want to know about the location, you'll need to be a bit more precise as at least one of those streets is pretty long.

We are mostly looking at the safety of the area firstly, then followed by convenience. We'd also like to easily find family friendly places to eat for dinner each night. The first is near metro station Strasbourg Saint Denis and the other is by Lamarck Caulaincourt.

Seems like the one in the 10th is closer to the main sights (Google Maps says 20 minutes to walk to the Louvre). Speaking of Google Maps, try using street view to get a feel for the neighborhood. The one in the 10th is on a short, narrow, one-way street, for example. Also, you can look for restaurants nearby. If there are safety concerns, I should think it would be mentioned in the reviews, which should always be read very closely.

Safety in the core part of Paris is pretty much a given so I wouldn't worry too much about that too much, proximity to metro, bus and restaurants/cafès should be your main concern. Metro station Strasbourg Saint Denis has lines running both north/south and east/west which is really ideal. The placement in the 18th is less than ideal from a touristy point of view both in proximity and transport.

Based purely on proximity and transport I'd go with the Rue d'Enghien without question. Rue Lamarck is long (for a Paris street) so it's harder to say but while Lamarck - Caulaincourt is picturesque and uniquely Parisian with kids the charm is probably less important than practical matters.

My $.02, enjoy Paris,

I would pick the one in the 10th solely because it's closer to sights. Are you asking because one property is less expensive option than the other? I suggest using something like CityMapper to plot out routes from the nearest metro to the places you want to go. I don't know for sure but it's possible the one farther out has faster connections than the one closer in - but without precise locations it's impossible to tell. With young children you do not want to spend most of your time in the metro going to/from places.

Well, I would pick the one near Lamarck - Caulaincourt because that is one of the most charming neighborhoods in Paris but it will add about 15 to 20 minutes (as compared to Rue d/Enghien) on the metro every time you want to go to the lower number arrondissements. Charming area would really be doing all the heavy lifting in my choice because Rue d'Enghein is definitely more convenient with two multi-line train stations, Bonne Nouvelle and Strasbourg Saint Denis, close by. Though I do not like bouillons, but you mention family friendly restaurants so, FYI, Bouillon Julien is near Rue d'Enghein.

The area around the Strasbourg Saint Denis metro has long been a red light district. I am sure gentrification has changed that a bit, but traditionally you would definitely see some prostitutes working that area. Beyond that there’s lots of nightlife and the station gets crowded; as with anywhere on a big metropolis, stay vigilant and do your thing, and you should be fine.

Hi,

Another bouillon restaurant is located in the 10th, "Bouillon Chartier" opposite of Gard de l'Est, aside that on Rue d"Enghien . They are big spacious family restaurants, patrons are both international tourists and lots of French , both groups with children. The food is good and not expensive.

I go to "Chartier " quite often when staying in Paris, almost never having to wait as a solo walk-in.

Rue d'Enghien is in an older, denser neighborhood. The red-light area was further south and is now changed, and it was mostly on a parallel street. However, the neighborhood, due to its density, is a little bit grittier than on the backside of Montmartre where rue Lamarck is located. The sidewalks in the rue Enghien area are very narrow, unlike the wide sidewalks on rue Lamarck. We stayed six months very close to rue Enghien.

You should look at maps to see where the closest green spaces are to both apartments if your children need play time. Also, use google streetview to spot the closest bakery, supermarket, etc. Then what floor is each apartment, is there an elevator if an upper floor, and do the bedrooms face the courtyard. Street side bedrooms are a deal breaker for me.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, the 10th does seem much more convenient when it comes to getting to the tourist destinations, I appreciate that we would be able to walk to the Louvre.

I've just read a fair of negative talk about the 10th arrondissement and don't want to be looking over my shoulder constantly. The one in Rue Lamarck just looked like a lovely suburb.

Thank you for the restaurant recommendations!
