Help! We keep striking out on places to stay in Dordogne!

Hello fellow travelers,

We are trying to plan a long-anticpated trip, aiming for sometime between May 25-June 6, but we're having terrible luck so far booking a place to stay. L'Ombrière ghosted us -- no response to our booking request, or a phone call and email. Le Petit Versailles emailed back to say they are no longer open... Tracking all this down has taken weeks longer than I expected, and now I feel like time is getting late to plan this trip.

I would greatly appreciate any recommendations for places to stay in the region. We are two couples in our early 40s. We'd prefer something more homey than a traditional hotel, which is why we'd been targeting B&Bs, but are open to anything wonderful others would recommend.

THANKS in advance!

I have booked with these folks twice -- once about 20 years ago and the other about 5 years ago when we shared a wonderful place with two master bedroom suites with another couple in Cadouin. They were terrific to deal with both times including when we managed to blow the master fuse in the first place and couldn't find the box (which was hidden in the attic).

When I booked it had its own website; now it seems to be on AirBNB so I don't know if the original hosts still run it. We really loved the village. Just a cafe and restaurant and small bakery and ice cream shop as well as the Abbey but easy parking and lovely garden where we ate dinner and breakfast after shopping in nearby markets.

One of the great things about this place is it had two lovely modern bathrooms, one for each bedroom and so splitting the cottage was easier than with cottages with a nice master and then a 'kids' room'. It also had a gorgeous garden that has herbs and sometimes of the year fruit -- there was a table in the garden where we ate dinner most days. Modern kitchen with American style washer and dryer. It was a perfect base for exploring the region.

We stayed in Sarlat which is an excellent location in the Dordogne. Close to everything. We stayed at the Villa Des Consuls. These are apartments located in the medieval quarter (pedestrian area). We had a 2-bedroom apartment with one bathroom and a kitchen/living area and a patio. From Sarlat, we visited caves, castles, gardens, and took a Dordogne River cruise on a river barge.

Sorry to add to your difficulties, but May 26 and June 6 are both French holidays, which means you are competing with French folks for your dates, too. Just wanted you to be aware — not that you won’t be able to find anything !! But just that you're not crazy if it seems things are getting booked up.

there are a lot of hotels with nice restaurants in the Dordogne - we stayed twice at la Roseraie in Montignac and have eaten at their restaurant 4 times and it was at the time the best food we had had in France (I think it has changed hands since so no recent experience with their restaurant). If you anticipate mostly eating in restaurants then a B&B will give you maximum privacy, your own bathroom etc. We once stayed at this place

which boasts a distant view of 5 chateaux and has a nice restaurant as well as nice rooms, pool etc.

We all stayed at a terrific hotel in Domme with a really great restaurant: l'esplanade ---- we had splurged on a room the night before we stayed there and so took a cheap room sans view in the annex. The meal was just outstanding.
