If you are there on Saturday or Sunday be sure to check out the outdoor Marche at Place de Bastille. I’ve stayed in this area for several weeks recently and highly recommend Bistro Paul Bert, Le Pure Cafe, Mme Shawn (for Thai food). Strolling Rue Charrone for more good restaurants and interesting shops.

From the Arsenal basin nearby, the St-Martin tour boat runs northeast to La Villette where the music and science centres and the new philharmonic hall are located. The first third of the trip, approaching La Republique, is in a tunnel; the rest climbs up the route using locks. It's quite a contrast to the Seine tours. The walk back to Bastille is long and interesting, or use the Metro.

Take a stroll on the Promenade Plantee on a nice day. It is behind the Opera House. A restaurant I can’t resist is Leon de Brunelles, right at Bastille. If you are interested in Urban Planning, the Pavillon de l’Arsenal, all about the City of Paris, is close by and it is free! I like the boat ride on the Canal St Martin up to La. Villette, but some find it boring. However, if you need a bit of a rest, it is a nice way to do it. The Science Museum (or whatever it is called) is right where the Canal ride terminates, interesting and fun. Want to see how they tunnel through the Alps? You’ll be in the right place.
