HELP! No trains back from Bayeux to Paris

I guess I messed up. I was just today (5/20) trying to book a train for us to arrive in Bayeux for our (rebooked) D-Day tour on June 12, and I can find a SNCF train (but just barely... can't use our Eurail passes) there but there are no trains back into Paris until the next morning!

What do I do?

Are these only reserved seats and there will be more available that morning or night before? (In the US sometimes there are some things that can't be reserved? Or not until right before??)
Do I book a train in? Maybe take the bus home?
Do we pay someone to drive us to Paris? (this sounds expensive!)
Do we try to find a hotel? (Not ideal, we're supposed to leave from Paris to go to Amsterdam the next morning, and already have a room booked in Paris... and this also sounds perhaps expensive)
Any other ideas?

It's been 20 some years since my husband and I have been to Europe and it seems like it's so different.... like at race to make reservations to every place!!!

Okay.... thoughts??

I see available trains for June 12th at 4:25, 5:39, 6:34, and 8:11.
I used the SNCF app, so I suggest you download the app and use that to search and buy. Let us know if that works. Bonne chance

Do I understand correctly that you want to take a train from Paris to Bayeux on 12 June and return that night to depart Paris the next morning for Amsterdam?

That is awfully tight scheduling. There are a number of trains from Bayeux to Gare St Lazare in the evening: 16h25, 17h39, or 18h34. Expect 2+ hours en route. Cost is about 40€ depending upon when you travel.

If https://www.sncf-connect.com/ is not working for you, try: https://www.thetrainline.com/

I would also suggest you consider getting your Eurail passes refunded. You’ll save money by purchasing just the trains you need, up to 3 months in advance, and avoid reservation fees and limited seat availability.

Okay... yes.
I have broken up the group of 4 into 3 and 1 and can now get tickets.
And yes, I'm quickly considering returning the Eurail passes, as everything I've booked so far has required a reservation anyway!
Thank you all for being patient for me to see how to do it. I DEPEND on this forum for all the advice for booking this trip. It is quite a bit of work of playing Travel Agent!!!

If you've booked reservations using the Eurail pass, you cannot return it as far as I know, even if you have not travelled yet. Double-check that of course, but I am pretty sure... Sorry about that.

Okay... yes.
Just booked trip from Paris to Amsterdam before this debacle. Maybe will still consider if it ends up being cheaper anyway.
You can't use Eurail in Italy, right? (We're also going to Venice, Florence and Rome)

You can use the pass in Italy. Reservations you can get at the station. The moment you start trying to get reservations before you fly out to Europe you should not have gotten the pass. The pass is about flexibility...

You can't use Eurail in Italy, right?

no that's not right. You can, only on Trenitalia, and only if you pay for reservations on everything faster than a Regionale or Regionale Veloce.

You cannot use it on ItaloTreno (the usually even cheaper competitor on high speed trains - I prefer them).

How are you getting from Amsterdam to Italy?

Maybe post your itinerary?

Okay.... maybe I have misunderstood. Because I was under the impression that you could not get the high speed train to Amsterdam without reservations.

And I only thought to get reservations to Bayeux because we have a very specific timeframe.

So are you saying that we could just wait until we're in Paris to book the tickets, and we'll be fine? Because I did get the right to cancel on the tickets I just got through SNCF.

I have officially secured SNCF tickets from Gare St. Lazare to Bayeux and back that evening.

As soon as I post our itinerary this group is going to have a fit! ;)
Paris>(Normandy day trip)>Amsterdam>Liege>Frankfurt>Munich>(night train to)Venice>Florence>Rome>(day trip to Pompeii)

Our trip is 16 days with flights. We don't have the luxury of extending it, and we are assuming that at least one of our adult children (who have not been before) will never make it back. They set the itinerary by what they wanted to do. It will be a whirlwind, or along the way we'll change our plans. The only things that are officially written in stone are day one in Paris where we fly into, and last day in Rome where we fly out of (well, I guess we have the D-day tour in Bayeux but even that's not REQUIRED if something should happen, but with the cost I sure hope it doesn't change.... I've planned a few things in other towns along the way, but I am open to things changing if necessary).

Reservations are not optional on the express trains you'll be taking between major cities. The deal is that in France, there's a limit of how many seats are made available on each train to pass holders. You can definitely find trains that are sold out for pass-holder seat reservations but have plenty of tickets available for direct purchase by folks without passes. When you buy a ticket a on seat-reservation-required train, that ticket already includes the necessary reservation; it's included in the cost. This is one reason a rail pass is usually not a money-saving purchase.

You will need seat reservations in Italy except for the Naples-Pompeii-Naples segments. Italian trains don't usually sell out, but I can't say 100% for sure it will not happen, so you should get those reservations a bit in advance. (Perhaps someone else will have a suggestion about how early you should do that.) The issue with using the rail pass in Italy is that Italian trains are relatively inexpensive, especially if you buy your tickets in advance, so the per-day cost of your rail pass is probably going to be more than you'd have spent on tickets.

Correction: I think it's possible you don't have to have reservations on the German trains. Whether it's prudent not to have them, I do not know.

I checked the rest of our legs (outside of italy) and it looks like we won't need reservations for those.

If you're on the Thalys between Paris and Amsterdam, I'm sure you need a reservation there, and there might be a limit on the number of pass-holder reservations.
