we are planning to travel through and stay in Burgundy in early June 2017. travelling by car from Switzerland and leaving Burgundy for the Loire , eg: east to west.
With 3 full days, ( 4 nights ) plus some extra time on the first and last day, we are thinking of staying in Beaune for 3 nights and then move onto Noyers ? for one night. before moving onto Amboise in the Loire.
We realize this in not enough time, but does this seem 'reasonable' and are there 'better' places to stay, for having a quick look at the surrounding area?
with the car we enjoy staying at small/ modest sized towns eg: not too big, that can create problems with navigating/parking etc. open to all types of accommodation suggestions.
any suggestions appreciated.
When booking accommodation for Noyer, I think you mean Noyers-sur-Serein, but be aware of towns with similar names, such as Noyer-sur-Cher, which is closer to Amboise.
Noyers in Burgundy is quite charming, although very small. Good alternatives are Chateauneuf-en-Auxois (also very small) and Semur-en-Auxois (a little bigger). Both are also beautiful.
thanks, yes I meant Noyers-sur-Serein.
..Near Beaune, perhaps 10 minutes out of town, i stayed at this highly recommended B&B ,Domaine des Anges
Address: Place des Marronniers, 21190 Puligny-Montrachet, France

Great English ( they are easy to understand as they are English) speaking hosts, great breakfast, modest rooms, and in a quiet town. They prepare a special dinner once or twice a week, which is wonderful, it's quite a home away from home, and i wish i could go back today! Parking on site, no hassles, not sure if they have bicycles or not. I found this B&B thru RS,,
We stayed near Avalon and Vezelay (and Auxerre) at Moulin des Ruats a little country hotel on a stream on the edge of the Morvan Forrest. Easy to drive to places nearby. Really liked it. It also has an excellent restaurant that attracts people from neighboring towns. We also spent a week once in Semur en Auxois and loved it as a base for traveling in the area. We spent a couple of nights in Beaune but I think it is too big to be a good base for the countryside and not a place I'd spent several nights. Here are some places we traveled from Semur including Chateneuf en Auxois (which I think is too small for a base.

In addition to what I recommended, I'd also second the Avallon/Vezelay area. We've stayed at a gite nearby several times, and driven along that little river valley (Vallee du Cousin) where the Moulin des Ruats is located. It's a lovely drive, and Avallon and Vezelay are both worth visiting.
thanks, great suggestions thus far, I will investigate.
Look at the Carpe Diem Guesthouse in Massangis. It was extraordinary... beautiful rooms, garden, parking, kind hosts, great breakfast and incredibly priced in my book. Easily drove to many sights mentioned already. One of our best trips, five days in Burgundy region, made even more memorable by the Carpe Diem. We drove to Noyers for dInner one evening, maybe just about 10 minutes by car. We drove in and out but it was very small.
I stayed in Avalon, late June last year. I visited Beaune for about 1/2 day on the way from my Burgundian base to my Alsatian base near Colmar and that was enough. Noyers, Auxerre, Vezelay, and more on day trips . . . all were wonderful. Are you starting in Geneva? I started in Chamonix and spent a day driving through Beaujolais, then one night/day in Cluny (well worth it) on the way to Burgundy.
Highly recommend Carpe Diem Guesthouse in Massangis!! It is the best place we've ever stayed and dinner there is a must (every night!). They are in a tiny village right up the road from Noyer, but I'd stay here all 4 nights and do day trips to all the medieval villages and just visit Beaune for a day rather than stay there. Then go from Massangis to Loire Valley. We were delighted with our choice in staying in Massangis rather than Beaune. The village is tiny, but dinner so fabulous you don't need to go elsewhere, then just head out for all day. Look them up on TripAdvisor, too!
thanks for the suggestions, we tried carpe diem ( june 2017) and they are booked out. we are thinking of staying nearby for longer and less time in beaune
wish I had heard about Carpe Diem when we needed a place at the end of September on our way north to Paris. We stayed in Auxerre near the Cathedral and it was fine -- but this B&B sounds terrific.
Yes, Janet, Cape Diem really is wonderful! If you are ever back in that area you should try to stay there. It is very quintessential French in the buildings, garden, etc. and just gorgeous rooms. But, the best part in our opinion is the dinner. The food is outstanding, but the dinner is really more about the experience. All the guests meet and sit for aperitif and the owner Patrick who speaks English will get a conversation going with the guests. He discusses the aperitif of the evening and he introduces everyone and gets everyone talking. After 20-30 min or so he calls us all to the table, he places us where he wants us (beside your companion) and then proceeds with each course followed with different wines for each course. The evening starts at 7:30 and lasts up until 10:30 or even almost 11:00. We have stayed there for 7 nights total and never did have another American with us. So, for us it was fascinating sitting with people from Belgium, Switzerland, England, France, and other countries. We are lucky that the language was English each night we stayed. We had fascinating conversations and made some new friends. It was a delight every night we stayed and probably our favorite experience ever! Oh, and don't start me about the cheese course, and the butter at breakfast...yum!
