Help me with the logical route

We are planning a trip in May 2017 to include:
Paris-5 days
Nice-3 days (Train into Monaco and other parts of French Riviera)
Positano-4 days (day trip to Pompeii)
Rome-5 days

In looking at the map Monaco is very close to Italy, so I am thinking no matter how we decide to plan it Monaco will be in the middle of our trip with either starting/ending in Paris or starting/ending in Italy. We working around dates for the F1 in Monaco which we will be attending.

Which do you think would be the best route? Train or fly between the cities? We will be traveling for 17 days (including flight days). Thank you!

Well, with the Grand Prix, you lucky lucky person, you will be walking into an absolute avalanche of people and congestion. I'm sure that you know that.

I'm equally sure that you have your hotel in Nice/Monaco/nearby all bought and paid for by now, and I'm surprised that you don't have the transportation nailed down.

I'd take the train from Paris because that's how I've traveled to Monaco for years, but many people fly. The time is about a wash. You are probably down to what's left in either flight or train.

Nice to Rome is a fairly long train ride, but scenic, down along the coast, change at Genova, and you can continue on to Napoli if you wish.

I don't know what flights connect Nice and Roma or Napoli....

Thanks Nigel. Nothing booked yet as our trip is still 15 months away and I usually don't book airfare till about 6 months out and lodging a year to 6 months.

My husband wants to go and I would love to Monaco so we will forge the crowds, I can only imagine how packed it will be.
