I was just getting our passports and International Driving Permits out for our trip leaving the US on June 17. In double checking the passport expiration dates, I realized that the one for my son expires January 23, 2017. Help me confirm that I'm doing the math right -- if we leave June 17, 2016, that is SEVEN months and a few days before the expiration, right? So we will be good for this trip, but will need to renew his when we return.
Thanks!
your arithmetic looks right to me.
This was on the USAToday website when I did a quick google search:
"All of the countries of the Schengen Agreement — 25 European countries, which is most but not all of them — require only three months' validity after exiting the country"
So it looks like the dates you want to use if the date you leave the country, not your departure.
Every country has their own rules for passport validity dates, so it's a good idea to check for the countries you are traveling to. For example, the travel.state.gov website says for France:
PASSPORT VALIDITY:
6 months minimum at entry and valid for 3 months beyond your planned date of final departure from the Schengen area.
Mardan
Except for Italy. According to the U.S. Department of State, U.S Passports & International Travel
- PASSPORT VALIDITY: Must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned date of departure from the Schengen area.
