Hi everyone. I’ll be headed to France in 2 weeks. I have plane tickets that I bought a few months back and I’m really looking forward to a getaway after a very stressful year. What I’m looking for though, is a getaway that has pleasant scenery. It seems that with the severe drought everything is dry, hot and various shades of brown. Does anyone know of any areas that might fit the bill this summer?

There is a town in Provence that is always an oasis in the hottest part of France - l'Isle-sur-le-Sorgue. The Sorgue River comes out of a spring above town (at Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, itself worth a visit) and feeds a verdant valley down the town where it divides into several rivulets that flow through what they call the Venice of Provence. The town is small but fully-serviced, known for its weekly market. We stayed in a gite about 5 minutes out of town that had a pool. Avignon, Nimes, Les Baux, St-Remy, the Cote-du-Rhone and the Luberon are all within easy drives (and you'll want to drive - the area is not served by train, making it even that much more off the beaten track).
Don't get me wrong - go 10 minutes out of town and you'll be in the hottest, driest part of France. But the town, the spring, and the valley are all beautiful.

What about the Vosges? Friends of mine have just returned from there, and their photos are full of lakes, mountains and trees

Saint Jean de Luz is usually a pleasant place to visit at the beginning of September/end of August. If you have a car you can go up to the mountains of the Basque Country which are still greenish.
