Heading to Colmar from Heidelberg

We’ll be driving from a stay in Heidelberg a Monday morning in late October.

Looking for help with the transition to Colmar.

It was recommended to do Triberg Fall and Titisee on the way, then drop the rental car in Freiburg im Breisgau and take the train to Colmar vs take the German rental over to France and leave it there??????

We could pay the extra fee and leave the rental in Colmar but the train seems long and may be too much to sort or just train from Heidelberg to Colmar and skip the whole drive there option.

3 nights Mon/Tues/Wed stay in Colmar

MON/TUES/WED Ideas - stay local - do covered market, little Venice, train/day trip to Strausbourg - electric bikes for Route du Vin little wine villages, Gengenbach

Taking the train on to Lucerne after this.

Thank you!!

Freiburg i. B. to Colmar is a train + bus connection; I believe that this PDF is the current timetable. It is a decent connection, but not that frequent and still takes 1.5 hours. Heidelberg-Triberg-Titisee-Freiburg i.B.-Colmar thus feels like an overly long day to me.

It might be more convenient to focus on the northern part of the Black Forest region (Baden-Baden & vicinity, return the car in Offenburg, and take the train to Strasbourg for Colmar.

Also, what is your next stop after Colmar? You could keep the German car there, and return it later if you can pass by a German city. For example, it would not be absurd to drive back to Freiburg or Offenburg to take a train to, respectively, Switzerland or Paris.

@balso thank you. I think maybe we will train Heidelberg to Colmar for less complication. After Colmar we train to Lucerne.

Makes sense. Easy trip by train, and you can rent a car in Colmar if you need one to tour the wine villages (it is really helpful to have one, if only for the day).
