Sylvia Beach, the founder of the English bookshop in Paris called Shakespeare & Company was born on this day in Baltimore in 1887.
The bookstore served as the salon for the Lost Generation during the interwar years, and Beach also published many of these authors, including the first printing of James Joyce's Ulysses.

That bookstore closed down in 1941 when Beach was imprisoned by the Nazis during the German occupation of Paris. Her health never really recovered after her release, but the modern version of the book store opened in 1951
