Handicap accessible public transportation

Hello I am wondering if buses or trains in Paris are able to be accessed with a motorized scooter. My husband is disabled and we will have a scooter for him to get around on but the parking situation seems to be difficult so am wondering if the public transportation can be an option to ride the scooter onto. Thanks

Hi - buses are equipped with a ramp that they push out to the sidewalk to allow scooters and wheelchairs on the bus. That will be your viable means of transport, as the metro unfortunately is in no way accessible to people in wheelchairs or motorized scooters (a few stations have elevators but they are few and far between, and you can't be sure of getting to the platform and out st the other end).

I am sorry to have to report such unfriendly news.

I would be concerned about a large scooter on buses; if it is sized for travel in Europe i.e. small, then buses will work There is a space in the middle of the bus where a wheel chair can go and ramps.

The metro is not accessible and I think you need to make arrangements ahead for trains.

You need to get reports from people who have done this; I'd suggest searching Trip Advisor for accounts of managing travel while disabled in France and of course also search this forum to see if anyone has left links or accounts.

All RER stations within Paris have elevator access and the entirety of RER A and RER B have access for those using wheelchairs. Métro 14 has elevator access at all stations. Buses and tramways have extendible ramps for wheelchair access. Depending upon the size and weight of a motorized scooter, access potentially may be limited.

The métro network originated at a time when elevators were new and not often used anywhere, however, the bus network should offer excellent access to the city.

You should be OK on buses but it will depend very much on the size/weight of the scooter. The info is available in French in this document - it says that wheelchairs/scooters must weigh less than 330kg (combined weight of both chair and occupant), and must fit within a rectangular floor area of 75cm x 125cm. If it is too large or heavy, it may not fit into the assigned space, or might damage the entry ramp.

If your electric scooter is heavier and/or larger than that you will need to either buy or rent something smaller and lighter.

Also keep in mind that taxis in Paris are private cars, not the purpose-built black cabs that you use in London which are cavernous inside and could host a soccer tournament.

If your scooter is small/light enough, buses are your best bet. Try to avoid rush hours. Even though the RER does have elevators at all stations, sometimes they are out of order (and you don't find out until you're there). Metro 14 seems to be reliably accessible.
