Hailing Taxis

This April will be my first time to Paris. While in the city, do you hail taxis like you would do in New York City or are there taxi stands that you go to an wait until the next one is available.

You have to find a taxi stand. I was just looking at you-tube videos with Les Frenchies for our upcoming trip to Paris in April. This was addressed - find a taxi stand.

You can also call taxis using the G7 app. I had heard about the app from another forum and was wary that is was an Uber knock-off, but it calls licensed taxis (and all the taxis have "G7" logos on their cars).

You actually can hail taxis, too, if they show a green light and if it is a safe / allowed place to stop (not in a bus lane!), so if you find yourself in the street and see a taxi with a green light passing by, you can flag it. There just aren't too many available taxis at weekday rush hours and Saturday late nights.

taxi stands in Paris rarely have taxis. You can stand there and hope one comes by. (very busy spots like the Bastille are an exception). You can hail taxis on the street as long as you are not very near a taxi stand. But it isn't like Chicago where it is easy to get a taxi -- you may find it is easy to use the app and order one (and pay the extra fee for that).

Use the metro. it gets you there faster and cheaper. I'd take a taxi from the airport but use the metro otherwise.

It's also difficult to get a taxi in a rainstorm, lol.

I've had fair success in hailing a cab and .... trust me on this .... I have very little experience with this living in North Idaho, hahaha! I've hailed them on a busy street and had very good luck in front of a museum where they were dropping off riders.

I've also used the G7 app with good success too - the difficulty sometimes is knowing what address to put in so they can find you.

DO download the app though! Will you have a data plan so you can have service if you are not somewhere there is free wifi?

G7 predates Uber by a long shot. (And its drivers were among the most, shall we say, vociferous taxi drivers in resisting the entry of Uber to the market). But the way they have set up their app has put them right back in the game. I find them a million times more reliable than Uber.

What Kim said. Download the G7 app to your smartphone. It has an English version and is very easy to use. G7 taxis are allowed to use the bus lanes in Paris (Uber is NOT), so they will get you to your destination faster. Don't bother hailing--use G7. It's excellent.
