Guided Tour of The Louvre

We will be visiting the Louvre in May. I will be getting tickets this week. I know the Museum can be overwhelming for first-timers.

I am wondering if taking the guided tour will give our group a good overview of the Louvre-visiting the 'greatest hits'. We all feel the same way-that we can't possible see everything in one visit. And that a visit of about 3 to 4 hours will be enough for us before we feel totally overwhelmed.

Looking forward to hearing about your feedback on the Louvre guided tour. Thanks.

Who’s in your “group”? That might influence my decision.

I love the Louvre and go once or twice every visit to Paris but honestly I’ve gotten so I max out by about 2-2.5 hours!

Three to four hours is a lot for one museum. If you really plan to do that, you should start with the Louvre's visitor's tour, do a little more on your own, stop for a seated lunch and then see some more. I go to the Louvre a few times a year, but even then my head gets stuffed after a while. Don't hesitate to sit down and just relax.

I have been to the Louvre twice and loved it.
First time, we did a guided tour for about an hour and then did the ancient Greek and Roman stuff for a couple of hours.

The museum is huge, so some planning is required. You could probably spend a week there and not do everything.
I lived in the Washington DC area for several years and spend many days visiting all the Smithsonian museums. Louvre is like that with endless things to see.

The Mona Lisa is now behind a thick bulletproof glass shield and difficult to really enjoy seeing it.
