Guidebook for Brittany

Good evening.

I am hoping to get some opinions on a couple of travel guides for an upcoming trip to Brittany. My preference would be to purchase a Michelin Green Guide but it appears that they are no longer produced in English. Rick's France book covers a couple of places we will be (Saint-Malo, Dinan) but misses out on other places we intend to visit (Rennes, Quimper, Vannes, as well as many little towns in between, for example).

Both Moon and Rough Guide have a Brittany & Normandy book, with one published this year and the other with a new edition coming out in Jan/26, so both are current (otherwise that might tip the scale). Having never used either one, I would really appreciate it if anyone who has experience with one or both could offer their thoughts.

Thanks very much in advance.

I used Eyewitness Travel for France as a starting point for Brittany. If you like small, hopelessly adorable towns, visit Locranon, close to Quimper.

I did a driving tour of Normandy with the Rough Guide in July, and found it very helpful.

FYI, you can find used copies of the Green Guide for Brittany on Amazon.

I used the Eyewitness DK Brittany guide this past summer. It was good enough to help us prioritize our time on the west coast.

Thank you to all for your helpful replies!

jules m: "small, hopelessly adorable towns" are my middle name! Locranon is definitely on the list!

Lin C, and Matt: super appreciate your feedback!

Robert: I have seen those used copies on Amazon but wondered if they might be too old to be useful?

gregglamarsh: I have already checked your "photo-dense TR" and found your pics to be stunning! Certainly increased my excitement level for this trip! Unfortunately, no access to the Toronto Reference Library for me, so I'll probably just go with the Rough Guide. Thanks for your thoughts to a fellow Canadian!

tripnsense: I would happily use Lonely Planet but can't locate a guide just for Brittany.

Sue! A kindred spirit!

I typically will consult multiple guidebooks. Quite often, we'll encounter a town or view and wonder why we didn't see it in the guidebook. I often will buy one book but also visit the library to peruse other guidebooks and take notes. I really do like the Eyewitness guidebooks, they cover more cities than many of the guidebooks, but with just brief information and pictures, which I always find helpful.

Also close to Locranon is pretty coastal town of Douarnenez.

Thanks, jules m!

I agree that using multiple sources is a good idea and often I will do the same (more kindred-ness!) when planning travel (which is almost as much fun for me as the actual travelling part).

I have always assumed the DK Eyewitness Guides were more "coffee table" books than anything else; you are convincing me otherwise so I will look at their Brittany Guide more closely. Again, many thanks.

Hi Sue here are 3 to add to your "hopelessly adorable" list : Auray/Saint-Goustan, Pont Aven, Rochefort-en-Terre. There are lots more all over Brittany.
We have found local tourist sites have excellent information. We haven't used a guidebook for our visits to Brittany
