Grenoble for four days in early November

Hello -

A friend of mine is working in Grenoble, France, for a few months, and another friend and I are thinking about going to visit her. I can only take four days off, so with travel time that equates to about 4.5 days in Grenoble (the half day being the day we arrive, so we'd also be jet-lagged that day). We would probably have to travel to Lyon or Paris the last day as well, if our flights are in the morning.

We have been to other areas of France, but never the south of France. We would probably want to do a trip with all three of us on the weekend, but the other days we would want to stay in/closer to Grenoble in order to spend time with our friend after she's done working. Any suggestions? We would prefer train travel to car rental, but would consider the latter if it takes us somewhere we can't reach by train or saves a lot of time.

Thanks in advance!

Aix-les-Bains is only an hour away by direct train. Frequent return trains in the late afternoon. If it was summer or winter, I'd suggest taking a local bus to one of the mountain resorts like Alpe d'Huez or Les Deux Alpes, but early November is not the time for these.

When we were in Grenoble in early Nov 2010 we took a bus from the station in Grenoble up the monastery where they make Chartreuse. It was a neat trip, beautiful area.
Annecy is another nice town north of Grenoble and over by Lyon, Vienne and Perouge are neat little town/village to visit. Perouge was one of my favorite stops.
