Grenoble and the French Alps

Hello all,
We will be visiting this August and considering Grenoble as one of our home bases. I would like to avoid the super crowds in Annency and Chamonix. We will be driving from Lyon and eventually will end up in Aix en Provence.
Would Grenoble be a good choice ? Are there other smaller towns in the area or close to Annency that would be candidates for consideration?

Thanks !

Last year we spent a week in a small [tiny] village not far from Grenoble. While we didn't visit Grenoble itself (we just ran out of time), we drove on the outskirts on our way to other places, and the traffic was pretty horrendous, Grenoble itself is probably a very nice place to stay, but I suspect you'd waste a lot of time getting in and out of the city. Chambery is not far, and is very nice, but you might find the same problem there. One nearby town we did pass through a couple of times was Chatte. Parts of it were nice, and other parts were very modern and not so attractive. We loved where we stayed (Beaucroissant), but there was virtually nothing there: a bakery, a butcher, a convenience store, and a simple restaurant nearby. But it was perfect for us.

Thanks for the information. Grenoble does it seem like quite a large city, and I was wondering about the traffic. We also enjoy staying in smaller towns for a homebase, and I think looking for one of those in the area would be perfect, but the question is, which one ???

William, there are a lot of towns in the area of Grenoble that might be worth staying in, most of them much bigger than Beaucroissant, where we stayed. I'm attaching a link to my travel blog, and you can take a look at some of the places we passed through or stopped at in the Isere. Two you might consider are Saint Laurent du Pont and Vizille.
