Good Restaurants in Mont St. Michel, Caen, and Bayeux

When we visit Normandy in about three weeks, I'd like to know the name of some restaurants that are a good value. Traditional French would be best, but I'd be happy to know the name of a restaurant of any kind that travelers think is a good value.

There aren't any good value restaurants on the island at Mont St-Michel, just tourist joints that charge 35 euros for an omelette. In Bayeux I like La Rapiere and Le Pommier.

We spent some time in Caen and found a little restaurant area east of the chateau on the pedestrian friendly Rue du Vaugueux. They had a lot of variety but we especially liked the buckwheat style of savory crepe/galette. We didn't find any restaurants in the city center to be very repeat worthy.

I sort of stumbled on St. Andrew's Restaurant, which is located not too far from the train station in Caen. It's right on the Orne. I am not remotely an expert on French food and don't remember what I ate, but I do remember liking it a lot and going back a day or two later, only to find the restaurant closed for the day. My notes say that I had a 3-course meal (I think at dinner time) for just 24.50 euros. I drink only water, however. I think you'd be pleased by this place.

Whatever you do, don't eat at the restaurant of the Campanile hotel on the outskirts of Bayeux.

Le Triskell is a great traditional creperie in Bayeux in a cool refurbished old building in a nice setting. Very good value for money, too.

Bayeux:
Here's what we said in reply to a similar inquiry in January this year:

L'Assiette Normande: probably our favorite during a 6-night stay. On the corner opposite the cathedral. Came recommended by our VRBO hostess with much local experience.

Le Moulin De La Galette: enjoyed a nice lunch on a chilly day; nice views of the river.

Hôtel Reine Mathilde: on a warm night we enjoyed an excellent meal outside on their plaza; near the river.

We didn't get to La Rapière; probably a mistake!

I agree about the restaurants in Mont Saint Michel. Not good. And I think they are all somehow related, because menus were similar. We ate at a place that was on the bus shuttle route from the parking to the abbey. High prices and lousy food. I didn't think it was possible to get a bad meal in France. We stayed at Auberge de la Baie (nice enough, good value, close to the abbey) and the people in their restaurant seemed to be enjoying their meal more than we did at the place we went to. The food that we did see looked good.
We loved picnicking in France. I don't recall grocery type stores in the Mont Saint Michel area other than a convenience store on the shuttle route, but you could plan ahead and have some wine, cheese, chocolate. I did find a nice baguette and pastry at the convenience store on the shuttle route. We stopped at a picnic table that was probably affiliated with a deli/convenience store and no one seemed to mind.

In Bayeux we liked L’Assiette Normand. Welcoming, friendly servers, good food and reasonably priced. We had dinner there twice over our four night stay.
