How does this work in practice. I can’t buy on line but both sites require timed entry. Is it practical or am I going to waste a lot of time waiting in line at both places?

I have visited Musée Marmottan twice. Neither time did I purchase a ticket online, and neither time did I have to wait long if at all. Although I do tend to visit museums relatively early in the day.

I purchased timed tickets for our April visit and there was no line once we got there (to Marmottan) and it was very much not crowded during our visit. But it was very enjoyable.
