Hello --- My mom and I are taking Rick's Best of Paris tour during the last week of March. My mom wanted to visit Giverny before or after the tour. However, it looks like Monet's Gardens do not open until April 1st, by which time we'll be home. Is it worthwhile to visit Giverny if Monet's Gardens are closed?
You won't see very much.
Hi Sara, I’ve done this tour twice (2007 & 2018), you’ll love it! You get a Paris Museum Pass and a metro pass included with the tour. This gives you alot of flexibility to see and do things in your free time. Get advance tickets online if you plan to do the Eiffel Tower.
If you can stay a few days after your tour, definitely make the trip to Giverny. If it’s not open, there’s not much else to see there. Have fun in my favorite city!
I'm not sure what Donna means. If the gardens are closed, all you'll see is the house. Interesting, but the gardens are the best part, for me anyway. If you are fans of Monet, go to the Marmottan Museum instead and enjoy an excellent collection of his works, spanning his entire career.
Sara's tour ends March 30. Giverny opens April 1. What I meant was that it would be worth staying a few extra days to see Monet's House and Gardens. If she can't extend her trip, there's not much else to see there. The Museum of Impressionism is okay but Monet's original art is in Paris. According to the website, it looks like the Museum opens March 30.
Agree that you should do the Marmottan Museum during your free time in Paris. It's a private collection of Monet's works, the largest collection in the world. Very nice. You will also visit the Orangerie as part of your tour. The waterlilies are amazing. Have fun!
Is the house even open when the gardens are closed? I'd stay in Paris and see the Monets at the Marmottan and the Orangerie. The Marmottan is not on the museum pass but is well worth the visit. The painting for which Impressionism is named i.e.Impression Sunrise, is at this museum with many other Monets.
Just my opinion, but the house is just not that interesting by itself. Its neither palatial or ornately furnished, and is not full of art as many seemed to expect that it would be. It reminded me of countless plain farmhouses you see here in the midwest US. I don't think it gives you any insight into Monet or art.
I absolutely adore most of Monet's paintings and I have made special trips to Giverny and Paris for the Orangerie and the Marmottan.
Purely from my perspective I know, but fyi
I spent about 2 hours in the garden at Giverny and took about 100 photos, about 2/3 around the pond at many various angles and depths.
I spent at least 90 minutes in the Orangerie, much of it sitting still and absorbing the main mural paintings.
I spent over 3 hours at the Marmottan.
I spent between 10 and 20 minutes in the house at Giverny, and was not particularly impressed in any of the rooms. I then went back out to the very high growth parts of the garden.
I have only visited Giverny in June, Paris many times and in all seasons.
YMMV.
Thanks to everyone for your responses! I think I'll save Giverny for another trip.
