Giverny Day Trip During Olympics (August)

We will be going to the Paris Olympics and would like to do a day trip to Giverny one day. Our only completely event free day is a Sunday; otherwise we can go on a Tuesday or a Friday (when our only events are late evening). I read in Rick Steves' Paris book that one should avoid Sundays for a day trip to Giverny due to crowds from cruise ships that day. Does everyone agree with this or are we just as well off going on Sunday since it's our only completely free day? We'll aim for the 8:15 am train

Related to the train, can I just buy on the SNCF website a few days in advance?

Thanks!

Is that really what it says in the RS Paris book? Because if so, I’m sorry to say, it doesn’t make much sense. There isn’t a cruise ship port anywhere near Giverny, or Paris. The closest cruise port would probably be Le Havre, a 2 hour drive from Giverny, but cruise ships can and will dock there any day of the week not just on Sunday.
It really doesn’t matter what day of the week you visit Giverny, if it’s in the summer it will be busy. The best way to avoid some of the crowds is to arrive as early as possible
