My grown daughter and I will be in Paris for 5 days at the beginning of September. My number one wish is to see Monet's home and gardens, and to visit Auvers where Van Gogh lived his last days. There are small group tours advertised that leave Paris at about 8 a.m. and return around 6. I know this won't give me much time at either venue but I would like to do both. I have also considered splitting into two half day trips but with limited time in Paris I hate to double up on travel time. Do you have any suggestions? Not sure I am brave enough to rent a car and do it on my own, although I would prefer to set my own pace and wander around as I wish. I have even wondered if I could hire someone to drive us so that we have more time T venues and just eat in the car between, rather than stopping for lunch. Are there any companies like Uber that would have drivers for a day without it costing a fortune? I hope to visit both graves as well. Do they allow rubbings? I am sure I already know the answer but thought I would ask!
Sounds like this is a trip-of-a-lifetime experience for you. I would NOT consider driving yourself--it's too stressful and will take away the joy you hope to experience. A tour is a good idea--easy and low stress. If you want to hire someone to drive you around, Rick recommends Paris Webservices, but they could be pricey. You could also hire a private guide who has a car--Rick mentions several in his book. Other alternatives would be to hire a taxi for the day or an Uber driver. Good luck and have a great trip.
