Getting to Eze Village

Bonjour!

A couple of days ago we used Rick’s advice on how to get to Eze Village. Actually, getting there is more complicated than the book suggests. For one thing, or maybe a very important thing, is that the bus driver takes lunch off so there’s no service in the middle of the day. This means that you have to wait for at least an hour and a half until the schedule gets going again.

As it happened, seven of us strangers chipped in and paid 8 Euros each to make the climb by taxi. Getting down was a lot more straight forward as there are no afternoon breaks and the bus schedule was pretty much on time.

At this time of year on the Côte d’Azur, there’s lots of activity due to the Grand Prix coming up and the Cannes Film Festival currently happening. It was strange to see so much traffic in a small village like Eze!

Appreciate your post, Janete! I will be there in September. How much time ideally did you want to be there?

Bonjour Jean,

If you want to have lunch in Eze Village and climb to the top of the hill to see the spectacular views, I would say about 2-3 hours. It takes a while to get up there, even in a taxi and then coming down by bus or taxi. There is also a path to hike up and/or down. The lady at the TI in Eze bord la mer talked us out of it but we met a couple who hiked up and took the bus down. They were not real young, by the way, and also were not wearing hiking gear. So it’s possible to hike, but you will need at least 45 minutes or more and it’s high! So, the short answer to your question: about 3 hours to do Eze Village.

That's a pretty rigorous hike up.
Taxi saves you time and energy, plus you don't end up so sweaty that they won't let you on the patio bar of the 5-star restaurant with the iconic/postcard view.
Don't walk.
And when you want to come down, you can usually find a couple who want to do the same and you can share the taxi down to the train station.
We even found a couple at the train station to share the taxi up. You just have to phone the taxi service, the number is on a sign at the train station.

Once you get up to Eze, there's a patio bar at the 5-star hotel, I forget the name but it's the one the stars/billionaires sleep at, and if you pass the dress code (guys should have a sport jacket and collared shirt, no jogging shoes, but no tie needed), they'll let you have a glass of wine on the patio with the iconic view of the coast.

That hike up is rigorous. It is know as the Nietzsche path. I tried it and turned around but that was because it was too hot; Best done on a cloudy day or early in the morning

That shuttle bus is infrequent from Eze sur Mer -- for others planning in the future simply take the direct buses from Nice, Monaco, etc. to Eze le village. You can also walk the path down and then catch the train. Uber will drop off into Eze but you'll have problems once you are there getting one back.

.
It is a peak time in Monaco -- you hear a lot of American tourists everywhere

Kent, The restaurant/hotel you are talking about is Chevre d'or. Absolutely stunning. We ate dinner there years ago on our first trip to France.

I don't remember it being hard to get there but definitely worth the trip.

We will also be in the French Riviera in September. We are staying at the Welcome Hotel in Ville Franche-sur-Mer. I think I read on another post that some had used Uber as well. We were thinking about doing that to get up there on our second morning in the area and then walking down depending on the weather and how difficult coming down is!

When I went I used the simple-to-use-and-takes-you-right-to-the-village bus - from Nice gare des Routiers bus station.

Fast, cheap and direct. Bus 82. Easy to find near the Port (Nice). Not too frequent, but the timetable is easy to find.
