Geneva or Lyon Airport?

I'd like to get your input on a dilemma I'm having regarding which airport to fly into.

We will be flying from Edinburgh, to either Geneva (GVA) or Lyon (LYS).

We will be traveling to Annecy & Chamonix, so here are our options:

  1. Fly to Lyon >> train to Annecy >> train to Chamonix >> Avignon (via
    Lyon or Valence)

  2. Fly to Geneva >> train or shuttle to Chamonix >> Annecy >> Avignon.

Which route is more scenic?

Which airport is more tourist friendly?

If you've taken either of these routes, I'd appreciate your input very much.

Thanks you!

Priscilla

I'd go with which airport has an Easyjet connection, and which is cheaper on the day. I've not flown into either but I expect there's not a whole world of difference.

It's been years, but Lyon airport is a long way from anywhere.

I've flown into both Lyon and Geneva several times. Geneva airport is much more convenient for what you want. There is very good bus service to both Annecy and Chamonix, although in some cases, depending on the time of day, you may need to go into Geneva center first. Here is some info:

I'd choose Geneva on the sole basis that it means you pretty much avoid backtracking.
If time allows then include a stop in Lyon between Annecy and Avignon.
Added bonuses perhaps will be Geneva's convenient airport, better choice of flights, and cheaper fares.

Many thanks for your help, Nigel, JerryG, Robert & David!

I've decided to fly into Geneva & just booked our flights at a great fare of 31£ pp!

Does anyone know if Easyjet flights have a reputation for arriving on time or delayed?

Robert, thanks for the helpful link! Have you taken a shuttle to Chamonix?

There are so many companies providing this service
& I wonder which one is the best option.
I'd like to book the shuttle bus in advance, but not sure if this is wise, especially if flight happens to arrive late.

Thanks again guys!

I've flown easyjet a number of times without any delays that I recall.
They are regarded as the best European LCC (as opposed to Ryanair), so as long as you are aware of all their baggage and checkin conditions, then I wouldn't be concerned.

David, thanks for the reassurance regarding easyjet airlines!

Robert, thanks for the bus link!

Where did you stay in Annecy? Did you take any day trips from there?

Priscilla -- One week we stayed in an apartment, but on other trips we stayed at hotels. One was Hotel de Savoie, but I wouldn't recommend it. Another was Hotel Alexandra, which I would recommend (and it's now #1 on Tripadvisor). We have friends who stayed at the Hotel du Chateau and loved it.
As to day trips, we mostly stuck to the area around the lake. We walked about halfway around each side, and also took bus trips further along the lake. The only longer day trip we took was to Chambery, by train (we didn't have a car for any of the visits).

Thanks Robert!

I'm waiting for a response from Hotel du Chateau & have have made a reservation at the Ibis hotel in case Hotel du Chateau is already booked.

Thanks again!
