Gare du Nord to Rue Cler area

My sister and I will be arriving via Eurostar midday and are staying near Rue Cler. Is the Metro relatively easy or should we taxi?

We do that route via taxi. Negotiating the Metro with luggage is not fun. As I recall, the last time it was about €25.00.

Yes, take a taxi. Métro connections aren't good to that area. You'd have to change lines somewhere along the way, and with luggage, it's not fun.

I’d take a taxi if I had luggage but the metro will not be difficult unless you find changing train lines challenging. The metro trip involves taking line 4 from Gare du Nord to Strasbourg Saint Denis station and changing there for Line 8 to either Ecole Militaire or La Tour Maubourg.

If you travel light and can carry your luggage up and down steep stairs you can use the metro, but this area is poorly served by public transport compared to many other areas of Paris. you could take the 4 and transfer to the 8 to Ecole militaire and walk from there.

The Metro connections to that part of the city. Not sure why it’s now poorly served?

. But sadly the Paris metro is far from accessible which means you will be carrying your luggage up and down steps.

I’ve done it quite often but now that I’m in my 60s I admit I just pay for a taxi

Parts of the rue Cler area, if you go towards the Seine, are at least 1/4 mile from École Militaire which is "poorly served" by Paris standards.

The line 4 to line 8 transfer at Strasbourg Saint Denis has an average number of stairs, and there is an escalator from the southbound line 8 platform to the street at École Militaire, so this is not the worst trip with luggage. It depends on what you are carrying!

Download the Bonjour RATP app for RER, metro and bus info. You will need to be familiar with it during your stay.

I don’t like to use the metro with luggage. Too many stairs at most of them. I would splurge for a taxi from the official line outside the station.

Just take a taxi. Go to the official taxi rank and wait your turn. If someone approaches you about a taxi, ignore them. They are crooks.

Gare du Nord has a bit of a reputation for taxi scams. Make sure that if you take a taxi that you go to the official taxi line. That line used to be immediately outside on the west side of the building but it was moved last year because of pre-Olympics work and I am not sure if it is back in the original spot or someplace else. Also, do not let anyone tell you that it is a flat rate from Gare du Nord. It is a metered fare. You can also consider the VTC that SNCF has partnered with: https://monchauffeur.sncf-connect.com/reserver-un-taxi-vtc.
