Gare du Nord neighbourhood

I will be checking bags at Gare du Nord for 3 or 4 hours between 11:00 and mid afternoon. Any suggestions for places to see or things to do in the area. Lunch is a definite probability. It will be my first of seven days in Paris

I'd head a couple of RER stops to St. Michel and visit Notre Dame and the islands and grab lunch somewhere in that area.

Montmartre is to the northwest of Gare du Nord.

Buy some metro/bus tickets downstairs at the station. Then go behind the station where there is a bus terminal. Look for the Bus 42 stop. Take this bus to Champs de Mars (the stops are shown as the bus approaches, on an electronic panel, you can't go wrong) and when you get off the bus there you will see the Eiffel Tower a short stroll away. It's always exciting when you get off the bus and there it is, in all its eccentric glory. To go back to Gare du Nord cross the road opposite to where you got off, for the stop for No. 42.

Thanks everyone. I think we are leaning towards a walk in the montmartre direction with some lunch and people watching thrown in.

Good news: You'll get your exercise walking from the train station and up the big hill to the top of Montmartre.
Fun plus exercise.
Bon voyage!

Hi,

That walk from Gare du Nord to Montmarte is ca. 25-30 mins, straight, as you go from the 10th to the 9th arrond. When you see the merry-go-round, you know that's the neighborhood.
