I will be visiting Paris between Dec 26 and Jan 2. I have visited Versailles before, and the highlight for me was just walking the gardens. I am hoping they are open in the winter. Does anyone know if the gardens are open during the week between Christmas and New Years?
The gardens are open 365 days a year; it's a public park.
the gardens are open and free; the fountains of course are closed down all winter.
Referring to the comment about fountains being drained and statues covered in winter: Does anyone know about what date in the fall this happens, and what date in the spring the fountains start playing and statues get uncovered?
As previously said the winter season for Versailles gardens is from late October, and indeed the statues are covered, the groves hiding the great fountains are closed. If there is snow and ice, there is also the risk that for "security reasons" they might just close the gardens in case someone tries to walk on thin ice...
If possible yes April-October, either on a week-end or 'Musical garden' some Tuesdays is the best option.
I would not go all the way out of the city to Versailles just for the Gardens. There are lovely parks in Paris i you want to spend some time outside which are likely to be more attractive in winter. Luxembourg Gardens, Parc Monceau, Butte Chaumont, Tuilleries, Montsouris and the forrests on each side of the city.
We were at Versailles on Tuesday 12/4 and the gardens were open. The fountains are dry and many statues along the paths are covered with tarps.
Yes, the gardens will be open with the following opening hours:
08:00 to 20:30 with last entrance at 19:00
I think you would be disappointed. The gardens are open, but definitely “closed” in a practical sense. With everything drained, shut-down, dead and cold, it’s dreary. Definitely not worth the effort, save it for another trip. Maybe Pere Lachaise would be a better “outdoor” option?
