From CDG to Strasbourg late evening

Hello,

I will be landing at CDG (from Copenhagen) at 7:30pm on Dec 18th and will be needing to get to Strasbourg. The schedule for that day isn't out yet but looking at an earlier Sunday schedule it seems the last train for Strasbourg leaves around 8pm. Is this right? I believe we will have gone through immigration in Copenhagen so that won't be a concern at CDG, but still I will be cutting it close. Is it better to overnight at CDG and take the morning train to Strasbourg or might the Dec 18th schedule turn out to be more favorable? My preference is to get to Strasbourg on the 18th to maximize the following day there.

Thanks!!

Hi,

Your best option is to stay by Gare de l'Est in Paris, and take one of the many trains to Strasbourg the following morning. You will have more options than from CDG, and can easily get to Strasbourg by 9 AM the following day.
You will most likely not be able to catch the last train out of CDG (or out of Paris) if you land at 7.30 PM.

Balso is right about taking the very fast train in 1:47 hrs. It's 250 miles to Strasbourg.

The last train today leaves @ 21:55 p.m. The first train of tomorrow is @ 6:55 a.m. You could stay out at CDG.

Another alternative would be to fly into Zurich--possibly getting there a little earlier. There's a train station in the airport that can take you to Strasbourg in about 2 hours.

Due to past experience, we try to avoid CDG and the hassle of going into Paris.

Yes, immigration will be handled in Copenhagen. Staying a night in Paris and taking the train the next day is probably the best option.

Also, if you are heading to Strasbourg, flying to Frankfurt or Zürich might have been a better idea.

Thanks for the helpful responses. Unfortunately, I made the flight reservation well before I started developing the itinerary. I am unable to modify the flight now.

@David

"The first train of tomorrow is @ 6:55 a.m. You could stay out at CDG."

The 6:55 am is from Gare de l'Est, correct? The earliest out from CDG on a Monday, say Nov 19th (the schedule for Dec 19th isn't out yet), appears to be 11:59am. As Balso said, there seem to be far fewer options coming out of CDG unless the Dec schedule improves the frequency. I can't imagine why that would happen. If anything, one would expect the frequency to decrease in winter.

It seems I could catch an express RER B from CDG that would get me to Gare Du Nord in about 30 mins. If I am reading the map correctly, Gare de l'Est is only about a 10 min walk from Gare Du Nord? In which case I could find an accommodation thereabout -- seems a pretty manageable option.

@David

Actually, upon reflection, it seems you are suggesting that I could just choose to stay at CDG and make the 40 min trip (30 min. train + 10 min. walk) to Gare de l'Est in the morning. Right?

You are reading the schedules correctly. There are no early morning TGV from CDG airport. Since 7.30 pm is not that late, I would suggest that you travel to Paris first, sleep by Gare de l'Est, and have a good night's sleep without any worries about getting to the station the following morning. If I were staying at CDG, to catch a 6.55 AM train at Gare de l'Est I would like to be on the RER by 5.50 AM latest, which would kill my energy for the entire day. Hotels by Gare de l'Est won't cost more than at CDG.

And staying in Paris will be more fun than staying at the airport.

Hi,

I would suggest as given above to take the RER into Paris Gare du Nord, which is few minutes walk from Est, depending on which route you take. The longer one avoids the narrow stairs leading to Est. Doing it that way means you exit Nord on Rue de St Quentin, pass by the New Hotel, continue until you see the McDonalds, then turn left. Ahead you'll see Gare de l'Est.

The immediate area outside of Nord has several hotels, 2 and 3 star. The next morning take the TGV from Est to Strasbourg. Expect the ride duration to be ca. 2 hours, direct.

There's an Ibis Hôtel on rue Saint Laurent one block from the Gare de l'Est station. Hearty breakfast buffet starts very early. Two minutes to get inside the station in the morning. Plenty of restaurants, too. Friends of mine have had an apartment on that quiet street for decades.

Got it, we’ll do just that. Overnight in Paris, take morning train to Alsace.

Thanks @Fred for your precise instructions on how to best exit Gare Du Nord for Gare De l’Est.

Yes, I was looking at that Ibis option as well. Looks pretty convenient!

@ Vishal....You're welcome. If you want to check out the shorter route from Nord to Est, you walk left out of Nord to the end of the block, cross that street. You see the Hotel Albert I (not a bad place either as it stands between Nord and Est), Cross over you see the BMW repair garage next to the hostel, going left you'll see the roof top of Est. Then it's the steep stairs, not too easy navigating them with heavy luggage. You avoid all this by taking the longer route "via McDonalds."

At the bottom of the stairs, ie when you reach the sidewalk, there might be these scammers, those type with the clip boards/petitions
trying to distract you....forget, pay them no heed, continue walking , don't stop at all. The entrance to Est right there is Rue d'Alsace.

On the left once you enter is the waiting room should you want to sit down.
