Good day! My husband and I will be in Burgundy for 6 days in late May and have 4 days afterwards to visit another city. We are flying out of Geneva so are considering Annecy (which we have heard good things about) but is over 4 hours via train or Lausanne, which is under 2,5 hours via train. We will be on a tour that ends in Beaune on a Sunday so we can’t rent a car that day as the car rentals are all closed. We are happy to take a train. We know very little about Lausanne. Both are reasonably close to the Geneva airport although Annecy is closer. We will have completed several days in both Normandy and Paris, and a 5-day biking trip of Burgundy so we will be tired and are looking for a place that we can relax, enjoy the views, have good food and see some cool places without pushing ourselves too hard. We would love for Rick himself to tell us what to do!!! Thoughts, opinions, suggestions are all welcome!
We arrived in and departed from Geneva last year. We stayed 3 nights in the area upon landing. We stayed at the edge of Morges, an attractive small town. Nyon is similar and is probably more practical for your plans. Staying in Nyon will give you very quick access to Geneva (15 minutes) and the Flix bus to Annecy (45 minutes). About 30 minutes to Lausanne, less than an hour to Montreux. Quick train to the airport.
Annecy has a lot of tourists which can make it quite crowded at times.
Lausanne is only 39 minutes to the Geneva airport by frequent trains, and has easy to reach relaxing towns on the lake by boat or train, as well as the sites in Lausanne itself.
Distance doesn't count in this case because Annecy is almost two hours by train .
The best way from Annecy to Geneva Airport is by bus, which is intrinsically less reliable than the train from Lausanne.
Personally I'd rather stay in a smaller town, like Vevey, but Lausanne isn't a bad choice.
