My husband and I will travel by car from Dinan to the Loire. How much time should we allow ourselves? We will leave there and head for the Dordogne for 6 days.
From Dinan to Amboise, it's about a 3 1/2-4 hour drive. To get decent time estimates, go to ViaMichelin.com. Enjoy the chateaux!
Yup, it took us about that long. Easy drive, no issues.
What month of the year? It makes a big difference, in terms of gardens, lumiere nights of chateaux, and crowded hotels. It can also be hot in the summer. How long you should allow depends on your interest in, primarily, the great chateaux. But other attractions could include cider, lace, troglodyte caves, historic abbeys (Fontevraud), and wine. Many of the best known chateaux are quite east of Tours, but we elected to visit mainly to the west. There are also ruined castles to consider, like Chinon. Chinon has a lot of affordable restaurants, and excellent local wines.
Thanks Tim. We will be traveling to France in late October. I have read and heard so many mixed reviews on the Loire. Am having a hard time deciding how long we should book a place there. We plan on staying in Amboise.
