I think you should use professional guides rather than "friends that you find on a website."

Also look at Paris Walks. They have a number of walking tours, not expensive. It's a good way to see things with a small group and maybe hook up with other tourists for a drink or a few hours. Staying a hostel is another good way to meet people to sightsee and/or have meals with, also to get tips on what to see and do.
