French Traffic Violation

I was driving a rental car in France in May. Long story short, I recently received a notice of traffic violaton(s). I found my way onto a website that, in theory, would allow me to make a credit card payment to resolve my fines. I entered a "N de Telepaiment" (a code that should enable me to pay), and got a message that my fine was old and I couldn't pay until I received a new notice (I assume with interest and/or penalty). That was over a month ago. I'd like to be able to pay whatever the fine is and if necessary with the interest and/or penalty, but I have no way to learn how much, and thus the online tool for credit card payment won't allow me to pay. Any idea how I can proceed to resolve my fine and thus not encounter a hassle when and if I travel to France again?

Hello Steve,
Sorry to hear about your ticket. It can be frustrating to realized that you unwittingly got a speeding ticket, but it should bring you some comfort to know you are not alone. In fact most unpaid tickets in France are from foreigners who then do not pay the fine. The French government is cracking down on these unpaid tickets and is tracking the tickets to the source. The car is registered in France so the government first imposes it on the rental company. The rental company then passes the fine on to the renter. If this fine is not paid it could effect your ability to drive in France. Also, it could affect your credit rating now or in the future. There is a really great website that helps break down your options to pay and explains the ticket form in more detail: http://english.controleradar.org/speeding-in-france.php.

I hope this helps you resolve the ticket. Remember that you can type French phrases into Google Translate to understand your ticket better. Bonne Chance!
