What is the most beautiful town to stay in? We want a beach hotel and to have some beach time. Is that possible in beginning October? Will the temp be warm enough? Any suggestions welcome!
Are you familiar with European beaches? Have you been to Europe before?
I think most Americans who have never been to Europe usually have an inaccurate vision of what a beach there is like, and they set themselves up for disappointment by having unrealistic expectations. If what you're looking for is really a "beach vacation" I think going to Europe (in October) is often not a wise choice. There are exceptions and edge cases, but if you're dreaming of "beach time", for most Americans, I think there are much better choices (outside Europe).
Look up the 10 day forecast for the place you pick before you go. I'd go to Antibes or Juan-les-Pins but there is no hotel on the beach in Antibes. Those beaches have sand versus pebbles. Nice has hotels across the Promenade Anglais but the beach is pebbles and not intimate enough for my taste. I would look at Eze sur mer beach town. It is more intimate but still pebbles.
Will the temp be warm enough
Warm enough for what? I have been to the Washington coast in January, when there were mini icebergs in the surf and enjoyed walking along the beach.
You are leaving in 2 weeks and still have not selected your destination or lodging? ( other than Paris for the Ryder Cup?--- sure hope you have reconsidered the long drive after the overnight flight)
As noted, beaches along the Cote d'Azur are often pebbly and not quite the same experience as going to some tropical destination. The weather starts turning and it can be hit or miss with rain and weather in early October. Most beach clubs will have shut down for the season. The likely will have retained some heat, as it's been a warm summer/September (normally the waters cools to the upper 60s to 70).
I'd consider Villefranche-sur-Mer. While not beachfront, there are places like the Welcome hotel and a decent large grain sand/pebble beach (the very good club closes for the season, however, next week). And it is among the most beautiful towns along the Cote. Juan Les Pins is probably the worst, in terms of charm, due to the large concrete blocks. There are also places on Cap Ferrat but less of a town/village feel (and smaller beaches like Paloma).
St. Tropez is another choice, but you need a car and the town can be a bit limiting.
