Would you recommend staying in Saint Savin or Caterets. It's hard to tell the difference. Thanks
I've spent the last 2 summers in Cauterets. Cauterets is a 19century town up in the mountains - you are surrounded by the mountains. Saint Savin is a small village on the edge of the Pyrenees. It has a bar and occasionally a restaurant and a view of a hill whereas Cauterets has at least a dozen restaurants and all the shops you would associate with a small town. And a cable car and ski lift.
Use street view. The difference is very easy to see.
THANK You! Interesting enough the population seems similar.
Probably that's the case, but that's permanent population over the locality - which for Saint Savin and probably half a dozen hamlets.
Cauterets population is in the one town - and at any time has as least as many tourists again. During the peak summer and winter seasons it probably has 3 or 4 times the population.
We have written about it quite a lot https://daysontheclaise.blogspot.com/search?q=Cauterets&max-results=20&by-date=true&m=1
