French Open (opening day) tips?

I realized that I'll be in Paris during the first round of the French Open, so I'm planning to buy a cheap pass for the outside courts. I'm wondering if y'all have any tips, especially for opening day.

I'm planning to wake up early on Wednesday morning to get in the online queue when tickets go on sale (5:00 AM). I'm assuming the basic grounds pass won't sell out immediately, but is there more demand for opening day?

I've read plenty of blogs that all give the same tips: bring your own food, ride the Metro (and get off at Michel Ange-Molitor), show up early because the security line is long. Is there anything I should know in addition to the basics? Does anyone know if you can bring in beer or wine (as long as it's under the 1.5L maximum, and in plastic)? I've read conflicting accounts of this online.

Update: Got my ticket, but it was a little ugly.

I logged onto the Roland Garros site a little before 5:00 AM, when the tickets went on sale, but couldn't actually get into the online ticket queue (phone worked before laptop) until 5:15. I started as #37,468. After watching the number tick down for an hour and a half, I finally got in only to find that--as I had feared--outside court passes for opening day were sold out. Show court tickets were still available, though, so I splurged for a seat on Suzanne Lenglen. This was my only day to go, so I didn't want to gamble and see if any tickets came up for resale.
