I know there are several French holidays in May but I cannot for the life of me remember when they are! We will be in Paris and then in the Dordogne. Any advice?
A couple of the big ones fall on Sundays this year, so they won't have any effect (the French don't do like we do in the U.S. and move a holiday to be observed on a weekday if it falls on a weekend).
The only big one will be between May 26-29. Expect severe traffic towards major cities on May 29th, and book accommodation asap if those are your dates.
Does anyone know how trains will be impacted by these holidays? I know they are running, but should we expect delays? Difficulty getting taxis?
Thanks everyone! Actually we will still be in France in early June. ChristineH: thanks very much for the link. Kim: thanks, looks like we got lucky with this year's dates. Balso: thank you. What is May 26-29? The link from ChristineH says it is Ascent. Is this the same as Pentecost Monday? We will actually be in the Dordogne at that time, definitely not in a big city unless one counts Sarlat as a big city! Does anyone have any idea how this might affect things like farmers markets or something big happening in Sarlat? And thank you, Kerouac. I hadn't thought to check for June!
May 26 is Ascension.
June 6 is Whit Monday.
We discovered all this the hard way years ago -- May is just full of traffic jams and awkward holidays. For a relentless secular country in which the majority don't believe in God, the devotion to minor religious holidays is amusing -- although it speaks to the French commitment for those who work to have lots of vacation breaks.
It won't affect your stay in Sarlat very much; some places may be closed or operate on a Sunday schedule on Thursday 26th May (Ascent), but impact is minor. And the impact of Whitmonday is close to zero.
Thanks again, one and all! I am, as ever amazed at how helpful everyone is on the travel forum!
