we will be in Nice on May 5 & 8th which are listed as holidays. Will Monte Carlo be a good place to visit then? I am sure the buses won;t be running on time, how do you get around during these days? we will not have a car.
thank you

Train works well. All the statios are a short walk to city center.
Train from Nice to Monaco works well, it drops you at the Monaco train station and you can walk or cab it to the Casino.
If you're going to the Monte Carlo Casino, they are serious about the dress code there--you won't be allowed to get past the first (smallish) room unless you comply. At least that was the situation 10 years ago.
May 1st and 8th are holidays but not the 5th.
I just looked it up. Easter is early this year so all the holidays that are based on Easter are also early. May 5th is Ascension Day. I don't remember how it is celebrated.
We were in France for Pentecost 2 years ago, arriving in Paris on Friday. Trains were sold out or expensive going south for the long weekend. If I had remembered Pentecost, I would have done the overseas flight a day earlier or made other arrangements to get south before the long weekend crunch.
Whoa, you're right. Vacation areas will be hopping with people who've taken the whole time off. Love the French system. It should be fine, Marilyn, because it also means that all the services for tourists will be functioning. Just watch for some early shop closures.
