We are interested in touring the French Alps. Not sure how much French we will need in the small towns. Any advice on that? We are not fluent but know some basic words in French.

Most places see large numbers of foreign tourists in winter, summer, or both. You should have no issue, unless you go to some very rural parts of the foothills of the Alps (and even then...).
