Free walking tour in Paris

Hi, we have taken prepaid guided tours and free walking tours before. The last one we took was the free walking tour in Lisbon, Vienna and Budapest. We seem to enjoy the free walking tours as it gave us the flexibility and it is more spontaneous and we were given tips of the hole on the wall places of interest and places to eat. We made sure to give tips to the guide from each of us afterwards. Is there one in Paris where we just show up and not have to sign up? Thanks

While it is not free, Paris Walks has no commitment. You show up at the meeting point and pay 15 Euros for the tour. There are standard daily topics, such as specific neighborhoods or history topics. They also have a monthly schedule with more specific topics. We have taken the St. Germain-des-Pres and Village Montmartre. We learned a lot about those two neighborhoods. The guide gave recommendations at the end of the tour for places to head next or restaurants in the area.

We just returned from our 3rd trip to Paris a week ago and for the first time used Paris Walks.
I cannot say enough great things about them! We did two we were there: The Latin Quarter and Jefferson & Franklin in Paris. Both guides were so thorough and interesting in their tours. We only wish we had more days to take a few more as they have many really interesting topics throughout the month.
We've done all types of guided tours (food, private, bike etc) and Paris Walks are at the top of our lists (at a fraction of some of the other tours cost!).

I'd give another vote to the not-free but no reservations needed Paris Walks.

I've done that Jefferson and Franklin tour too and it was wonderful. Brad developed it and has a PhD in history. His knowledge is amazing. I've also had him for the Paris during the Occupation tour on the Right Bank and it was terrific. I also have done that one with Chris who is excellent too.

You'd wind up tipping about the same for a free tour but I prefer to know I'm with a licensed guide who has quality information.

Rick has had some blog entries on "free" tours and indicates the way they operate is that a picture is taken at the beginning of the tour so the company knows how many started with it. The guide is responsible for paying the company so much per head whether they tip or not. I've not done one for a personal take on this.

The Paris Greeters is a different sort of organization but those would be scheduled in advance with your volunteer guide.

I am a fan of the Paris Greeters free walking tour. I book a walk with them every time I visit the city and have always had fun. They are all volunteer Parisians with love of Paris. I always look forward to my walks with Paris Greeters.

Sally, just be aware that Paris Greeters likes a 2 or 3 months ahead request.
They also ask for a donation but it is voluntary.
The greeters themselves do not accept tips but on the two times I have used them they would accept a coffee or ice cream during the walk or after.
It's a very nice service and I've been happy to support them.
