Free time in Paris

Hi - we will be taking the day trip tour from London to Paris. Since we went to the Louvre last time we will instead have about 2 hours of free time this trip. Anyone have any suggestions on what may be in the area surrounding the Louvre worth checking out? We thought about going to the cemetery to see Jim Morrison's grave but don't know if we have enough time. What about checking out Notre Dame? Looking for input.
Thanks

Follow what you thought and go see Jim Morrison's grave. It is in the city. It is in the Pere la Chaise cemetery (a popular tourist destination) Take the metro to the stop Pere la Chaise (note there may be a transfer to another line somewhere but you can map this out on the Paris metro website in advance no problem) or take the Taxi.

With two hours, assuming you'll be dropped off in front of the Louvre and you haven't previously been to Notre Dame and Sainte Chapelle, I would just walk over there. You would be rushed if you tried to visit Pere LaChaise, and unless your only interest is a pilgrimage to Morrison's grave, you would want a few hours there because it's a lovely place to visit and see the many other gravesites of famous people buried there. (Morrison's grave itself is nondescript except for the items people leave there.)

Thanks!!! Is Notre Dame within walking distance of the Louvre? That may be an option. I know we won't have time for a tour but can we at least go inside?

Also, if art is an interest, the Orangarie museum in the Tuileries offers the large Monet landscapes. A little closer than Notre Dame but if you have not done anything on Isle de la Cite, Notre Dame and/or Saint Chapelle should probably top your list. Notre Dame can be done with only a 2 hour window but Saint Chapelle usually has a very significant line (Notre Dame does too but it seems to move more quickly).

If areas near your train are of interest, Sacré-Cœur is convenient from Gare du Nord.

Arc de Triomphe is on the same metro line as Sacré-Cœur also so you could possible do both.

And yes, Isle de la Cite is within walking distance of the Louvre. About 25 minutes from pyramid to facade. Little over a mile.

You should clarify where you will be with two hours left in Paris so we a can tell you how far things are.

I think Lane's suggestion to walk to Nôtre Dame is perfect. The Louvre is on the Seine river, just walk east along the river and over a bridge to Ile de la Cité, where Nôtre Dame is. It's a lovely and very enjoyable walk. Not far. I suggest you get a map of Paris, even for your short time there, it is nice to see the lay of the land and where you are in it... and what's close by enough that you could see on your way back. I suggest walking back on the south side of the river for a slightly different perspective. Each side is basically equal distance from the Louvre.
You don't say when you'll be there, but don't be put off if there's a long line to go into ND, it moves fairly quickly. No fee to go in. It's a beautiful cathedral where a lot of history took place. Read up on it and it will be even more interesting for you.

Since you will be dropped off at the Louvre, you could visit the Musee de les Arts Decoratifs, which is in the Louvre, but is a separate museum. Entrance is on rue de Rivoli, just a short walk from your drop off point. Then you could easily return to your bus pickup spot.

I would go to Notre Dame. If there's a long line at Sainte-Chapelle, you could go to the Conciergerie right down the block. Don't be discouraged by a line at Notre Dame. It generally moves quickly. If you only have two hours, consider taking taxis instead of using half your two hours to walk to/from Notre Dame.

Your choice of course. Another idea is the Palais Royal right across the street from the Louvre and/or a stroll through the new Les Halles.

Jim Morrison's grave involves taking 3 Metros or a very slow bus to Gambetta, thus eating up most of your two hours.

desantisdd: You can make your own decisions about where to walk by looking at a map. www.googlemaps.com
Type in Notre Dame Paris and see what's around. The Nearby function will show bistros and bars too. The Functions function will map out routes from here to there.

Notre Dame is a long walk, I'd guess half to three-quarters of a mile. I'd guess maybe a 15 minute walk. There is often a long line to get into the cathedral but it moves very quickly so two-hours should be plenty.

There can be a line of an hour or more for the towers, you go up (and down) in escorted groups, so I don't think that's possible. You couldn't just bail out and hurry back if you were close to your pick up time.

Don't completely write off the option of seeing another part of the Louvre you skipped on your previous visit.

You could take a one hour Seine cruise with Vedettes du Pont Neuf.

Or, one of my favourite walks in Paris...
Louvre > Tuileries > Place Vendome > Opera > Madeleine > Place de la Concorde > Orangerie
