Frankfurt, Luxembourg, Belgium and finally France...help !

Hi everyone !

My husband &I will be in Paris on 11th May 2017 for an art exhibition so we decided to turn it to a 9 days trip, so it will be 6th-14th May 2017. Our initial plan is to fly Paris but since it's going to be a 9 days instead of 3 days, we plan to fly to Frankfurt, rent a car from there( and driving is kind of a hobby for me so no train suggestions :) please) and drive to first Luxembourg stay-over then to Belgium (any suggestions for must see/stay ?) then t o France, I need your help for planning the trip considering we will be in France from 9-14 though the last 3 days in Paris...Therefore can you make any recommendation what to see, stay or do ? or if it was you, what would be your trip itinerary for 5 days before Paris? Would you just skip Belgium and Luxemburg and spent more time in France? I'd truly love to stay at Champagne area. Any kind of advise is much appreciated. We are not on a tight budget thankfully :)

It's good that you are not on a budget because you may be facing a hefty fee for renting a car in Germany and returning it in France. Please find out what the fee is before you finalize your plans. It could be hundreds.

One other consideration with renting a car - if you end up staying in cities, the car will be a nuisance and parking fees will be high. If you plan to drive through the countryside and stay in small towns, a car makes more sense. However, with only five days, you may not have time for much exploring. I think you need to determine your itinerary before you decide on transportation.

I am a big fan of Belgium having spent time in Brussels, Bruges and Ghent. You could stay in any one of them and day trip to the others. Antwerp is another option, but I have not been there.

If it was me, I would spend the entire time in Paris and take day trips from there. Or I would spend 3 days in Normandy and the rest in Paris. Of course I am fascinated with WWII history and you may not be. It would help to know your interests.

Dear Carroll,
Thank you for your advise, since we've been to Paris several times, I am more keen on spending time at countryside. As for Belgium, we'll seriously give it a thought.

For more attractive countryside, I suggest following the Rhine from Frankfort to Basel or Freiburg, with a stay in the Black Forest around Baden-Baden then a cross to France through the Vosges. through to Reims. Six days seems a lot but it really isn't unless your object is just to cover ground. Besides art and countryside you haven't really mentioned any other interests. At this point, you might profitably consult some guide books or do some net research and see what takes your fancy,

Hi there!

I just returned from a trip where I used Paris as my home base... I took a two day trip to Brussels and from there went to Brugge. I spent the morning in Brussels and then hopped back on the train for the short ride to Brugge. And it's Brugge that I highly recommend! I just fell in love with this city... it seemed everywhere I turned there was yet another gorgeous view!

Another Belgian city I wanted to see was Leuven but I put it off for another trip. All the pictures of it look incredibly beautiful and I'm kinda kicking myself for not visiting! Perhaps others have been there and can verify if it's worth visiting or not however.

Wherever you go, enjoy your trip!

Dear 75020,
Thank you for the guidance :) we really like the idea of Schwarz Wald, as I am a equestrian, now I am going to check horse farms. If I find one, it will be such a bonus.

I think Luxembourg is worth a day. It is interesting to walk along the casements and I found the American Cemetery to be quite moving and well done. Some of the best baked goods in Europe...
