France - Where Should We Go

Hello!

We are a family of 4, with kids ages 5 and 2.

We will have spent time in Champagne, Beaune & Dijon, St.Tropez, and 2 weeks in St.Remy. We need to be in San Sebastian around Aug 3rd-4th-8th, and then we are meeting friends in Bordeaux Aug 8-12.

We are not extremely touristy and enjoy nature, food and wine vs. Museums, Chateaus etc.

Question
Where should we go next after St.Remy on July 28th-Aug 3rd. We will be renting a car.

Your expert opinion is requested!

I'm confused. If you're in St.-Remy until Aug 3, need to be in Bordeaux on August 8 and want to be in San Sebastian "around Aug 3rd-4th-8th", what is the question? There's plenty to do in the Basque Country to fill a lot more than 4 days, and you'll appreciate the cooler weather after (probably) sweltering in Provence.

The Basque Country is very pretty. You can research Bilbao (great historic district), Vitoria-Gasteiz (ditto) and the coastal towns of Hondarribia, Zarautz, Getaria, Zumaia and Lekeitio. With a car you might be able to get to the La Rioja wine area; check driving time on ViaMichelin.com. I don't do wine but can recommend a visit to the small hill town of Laguardia, which isn't too far away.

what about the French Basque coast - St Jean de Luz will be full of families enjoying the summer. Once you get there, everything's walkable. And it'll get you in the direction of where you need to be going for San Sebastian.

The five-year-old might like Carcassonne, a walled medieval city. There's a museum there but the city itself is the attraction. If you spend the night in or near the walled city, you can avoid the mid-day crowds. Not worth your whole five days, for sure, but a worthwhile stop as you make your way.

Thank you for the lovely ideas...I will certainly look into them.

To clarify I need something to do for the dates July 28-Aug 3rd. We leave St.Remy on July 28th.

Lots of interesting places on or near that route: Montpellier, Pezenas (small craft town), Narbonne and Toulouse are the ones I've been to.
