France trains, seats and recommended time for transfers.

I had a previous post about trains from Paris to Bayeux, it seems that due to construction there are no direct trains on May 31. There are several with two transfers.
Question 1 - Is a 9 minute transfer in Argentan too short?
Question 2 - We are able to book but not reserve seats on this route however, we are able to get our seats reserved on another trip a few days later from Paris to Bruges. I know on Italian trains they did not reserve seats until 2 months out, what about French trains? Does anyone know if there is a time frame for reserving seats?
Thank you.

Are you asking about reserving seats with a train pass or getting a reserve seat when you purchase the ticket? This statement ---- I know on Italian trains they did not reserve seats until 2 months out ------ is in error. You get a reserve seat the moment you book the ticket since all trains (except Regional) in Italy require a seat reservation and it comes with the ticket automatically.

Frank I am asking about getting a reserved seat when I purchase a ticket. We do not have a pass.
Last summer we were unable to get a reserved seat when purchasing a ticket until two months before the train travel date.

I’m sorry, perhaps I am not being clear. 😊 We would like to be able to select seats. I know they can be booked but selecting a seat is not available.

Not all trains have reserved seats. All TGVs have reserved seats but TERs generally do not.

Thank you Tocard, that is the simple answer I was looking for.
Any thoughts on the 9 minute transfer time?

I think you should wait a week or so. I was trying to book from Paris to Bayeux for June 2 and ran into the same difficulty. There were only 4 trains all day, none direct, very expensive, really awful times and all from Gare Montparnasse. I discovered that they had scheduled track work that weekend. At someone’s suggestion, I waited to book and checked the trains daily. To my surprise and delight when I checked this morning there were several trains added from St Lazare. I booked a direct train from St Lazare to Bayeux, leaving at 8:39 am and costing only 9 euros and we have assigned seats. I just checked for the 31st. They are still showing limited trains but that could change if you can wait. I can’t imagine they won’t add trains especially since it is the week of the 75th anniversary of D Day and Bayeux will be very busy. I would check daily! Good luck!
