Will be travelling in France for five weeks, from 9/14 to 10/18. I plan to take the train from Paris to Bourdeaux on 9/18; also planning train trips the first two weeks of October. Other than 9/18, my schedule is pretty fluid. How far in advance do I need to buy train tickets for October?

Paris to Bordeaux is a more expensive ticket. It is advantageous if you know your itinerary, to book earlier than later. I'd probably buy now. I don't know what your other tickets are, so I can't comment on when you should purchase.
I would buy my TGV tickets for Paris to Bordeaux right away, as the price will only go up. We were very comfortable on the Bordeaux-Paris route. We purchased 1st class for more luggage room and option to choose our seats. Just over 2 hour trip. Always buy your TGV tickets as soon as you know your dates. Prices do not go down as the date approaches, only up. Where are you going on the October trips? From where to where?
These tickets have been on sale for quite a while. It’s time to buy.
