We are traveling by train from Beaune, France to Mürren, Switzerland this summer and would like to visit another place for 3 nights along way. We have already been to Colmar, and loved it! Any other ideas? (Please note I have already posted this question on the Germany/Swiss forum.)
This isn't a straight shot from Beaune, and would involve looping to the south in France, then passing thru Geneva on the way to Murren, but for a great, big city consider Lyon. For a smaller city, then Annecy should be on your list. Have a great trip!
Or the short jog north to Dijon, then a straight shot passing through Lausanne and Montreux, either of which is worth a stop. The rail trip to Interlaken via the Golden Pass route from Montreux is also worth doing.
Thanks so much for the quick replies! Cyn, we already enjoyed a trip to Lyon last summer. Annecy is on my bucket list, but it seems out of the way without Lyon? Sam, I'll look into Dijon. We are scheduled to go to Montreaux and Lausanne after Mürren before flying out of Geneva.
You know the whole trip is only about 5 hours. Beaune -> Murren
Yes, Tim. The efficiency of the Swiss railroad is amazing. I just have 3 nights in between Beaune and Mürren to fill.
Bahn.de shows the quickest route as going via Dijon, Mulhouse, and Basel. Colmar would be a very short hop off this route.
Thanks, @Lola. Yes, Colmar is a logical stop, but we have already been there and would like to visit a new place. Thinking about Freiburg/Staufen or Strasbourg? Although, both those places seem to take me further away from Switzerland, but maybe OK with Europe's great trains.
If you loved Colmar, you will really enjoy its quaint, near by villages, such as Riquewhir which we liked better than Colmar.
