France - music playlist rec's?

Hi Guys,

I'm getting ready to go on the RS tour of South France tour and I wanna add some songs to my iPod to evoke the feeling of France. I'd like some "classics" (Edith Piaf, for example) but modern and pop/rock is okay too. What would you put on your playlist?

Thanks in advance everyone. You always have great ideas.

If you can go to the archives I have posted questions before for music and you will find lots of suggestions... but I am sure a lot of people will answer here too.
Sound tracks from Chocolat, Midnight in Paris, French Kiss are a few places to start.
Also, listen to Paris Café (a free radio station on a Jazz station) They give the titles, etc. so you can find some you like.
Pink Martini is another favorite.

Find Francis Cabrel-the album I have of his is Samedi Soir Sur La Terre, and if you don't love it I'll eat my hat. I know he has been quite popular for quite a while, not sure what he's up to now, but I would sure like to catch him in concert one day.
Also-there's a band called The Hot Club, out of the SF Bay area; Gypsy Jazz, they are incredible.

Piaf ,Brel , Charles Trenet , Yves Montand , Lucienne Delyle , too many to mention ! One of my favorites , now forgotten ; Jacqueline Francois . She had the most beautiful voice , paired with perfect diction and impeccable pitch . you can find her on Youtube . among her best : Vous qui passez sans me voir ; L'ame des poetes ; La Seine ; Que reste-t'il de nos amours .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzKDEFNiTUQ&feature=share&list=PL7733DF67E6133063

I'm taking that tour this year as well. :) Here's my France* playlist, for what it's worth:

I Love Paris – Frank Sinatra; Les yeux ouverts – Enzo Enzo; Divine – Sebastien Tellier; The Can-Can – Offenbach; La mer – Charles Trenet; Non, je ne regrette rien – Edith Piaf; Belleville Rendez-Vous – The Triplets of Belleville (soundtrack); French Rat Race – Double Six of Paris; Les Champs-Elysees – Champs-Elysees; April in Paris – Count Basie; Le poinconneur des lilas – Serge Gainsbourg; Ca plane pour moi – Plastic Bertrand [he may actually be Belgian, come to think of it]; Sympathique – Pink Martini; Viens a Saint Germain – Dany Brillant; Under the Bridges of Paris – Eartha Kitt; La vie en rose – Edith Piaf; Allez Olla Ole – Jessy Matador

*As you can see, I include actual French singers singing in French, as well as American singers singing about Paris. It's all music to put me a French-y mood.

Ok. You probably want more contemporary suggestions, but Camille Saint-Saens' Third Symphony with organ gets me to France. Altho I haven't been there is years it used to be one of the pieces in the movie in the French pavilion at Epcot. I am sure many will be appalled at that being an evocative memory, but there you have it!

For contemporary, I really like Natasha St-Pier. My favorite is Tu Trouveras.

While not contemporary, but also not mentioned yet, is Serge Reggiani.

To pick up on Pam's suggestion . some " classical " music would certainly make a lot of sense . In addition to the Saint-Saens Organ Symphony , try a few of these ; Debussy music for piano - " Suite Bergamasque " ( includes the well known " Clair de Lune " ), Arabesques 1 and 2 , Children's Corner Suite ( also orchestral version ) . Gabriel Faure - " Dolly " suite ( orchestral version ) Maurice Ravel - " La Valse " and " Valse Nobles et Sentimentales " Give these a try , These compositions are from the age of French impressionism , the music parallels the impressionist art movement . And of course , don't forget Jacqueline Francois !!

@Pam... I am not appalled by your suggestion at all... every time I am there I take the grandkids to see that movie and afterward we have a French pastry and dream of the time I can take 4 year old Ella to see the 'real Eiffel Tower" :))

Hi,

"...to evoke the feeling of France." Aside from Piaf, songs by Rina Kelly, (esp her "J'attendrai") Lucienne Boyer, Nana Moukouri (in French), and Francoise Hardy would absolutely be on my list. If you want kiddie, light-hearted tunes, add Dorothee too.

Hi,
You have to have some jazz manouche also called gypsy jazz (maybe not politically correct) or hot club jazz. It The origins of this music are largely from France in the '30s. One of the most noted musicians is Django Reinhardt a Romani guitarist from that same era.

I like the music of Hot Club San Francisco. Have Fun!
