We are planning a trip to the Loire Valley and then to Provence. To avoid summer crowds, we thought we would go in late April or early May. However, I see that schools are on vacation in April, and in May, there are a few national holidays. Therefore, should we expect those areas to be crowded with French visitors at that time? Will sites/shops/restaurants be closed on May holidays? I am looking for advice! Which time is best- late April or early May?
To me, this is a perfect time to go. Lovely weather, and French crowds should not be overwhelming - they spread out over the whole country.
Late April or early May makes little difference. The one day to be aware of is May 1: that's a major holiday when the vast majority of shops are closed and public transport stops to run except in a handful of cities (intercity trains run normally). Sites may or may not be affected, you have to check case by case.
Don't forget there's a little summer event, and advance and support teams will be coming into the country head of time. Who knows if there will be significant disruptions in other areas of the country, keeping in mind that not all events are in Paris.
Also, I'd avoid the week after Easter.
Have a great trip!
