We have four days between two Rick Steves tours - one in France and one in Spain. We would like to stay in Collioure for those days. It is confusing on the map as to where the hotels in the town are (up a hill? down an alley? in an adjacent town?). Has anyone stayed in Collioure and can you recommend a hotel near or on a beach? We are travelling by bus and train so do not have access to a car and will be walking to our destination. Thanks.
Lucky you! Collioure is a charming seaside town with a rich art history. Our hotel whose name escapes me was on the hill with a sweeping view. Collioure is one of the favorite places we have ever stayed!
I don’t have advice on lodgings in Colliourebut did want to chime in on nearby Narbonne. The historic market is very worthwhile. I’ve also heard quite a bit of rattle about Les Grand Buffets, an extravagant all you can eat buffet. Think lobster towers and entire fromageries.
Thanks for your input but we are looking for hotel recommendations in Collioure specifically and since we have no personal transportation Narbonne appears to be too far from the water for our needs. Safe travels everyone
This is a lovely place, absolutely memorable.
In 2011 we stayed here for 4 full days in July, serene , tranquil, arrived there by train from Perpignan. I don't recall the name of the hotel but it was ca. a 30 min. walk from the train station.
In 2018 we stayed at the Templiers Hotel Annexe.
This was very close to Royal Chateau and short walking distance to beaches. The breakfast was served in the very wonderful Templiers Bar (amazing art collection) at the Templiers Hotel itself and not at the Annexe.
This was perfect for us but we are low budget low needs traveller.
Early morning swims as the sun came up was magic.
If you are able bodied the short steepish hike from town up past the old windmill through vinyards to the fort St Elme is well worth the effort.
It's a lovely place.
Thanks so much for the hotel recommendation. We had our eye on the Templiers hotel but were wondering about the Annex and whether it would suit. We are also low budget travellers and are not opposed to walking to a site. Thanks for your input.
We spent 4 lovely days at Hotel Le Templiers in Collioure about 10 years ago. It’s on a street just a short walk from the train station. Not on a hill, not on a beach, but near the harbor.
The hotel was fascinating— its walls are covered with 2000 paintings, traded for food & lodging by famous 20th century artists like Matisse, Chagall & Picasso. My husband hiked up to Fort St. Elme, we visited the market and enjoyed delicious food & spectacular scenery.
Matisse supposedly said of his stay here, “No sky is bluer than Collioure’s.”
I haven't been back to Collioure in about 5 years. Unfortunately it has been discovered. When I saw the tour buses, I knew it was over for me. I've been visiting since the late 1980s.
That said, if one doesn't have fond memories of another, slower time, when the grocery closed for siesta, it is still a lovely place.
Hotels: La Bona Casa (small), Hotel le Mas des Citronniers (very nice) and the Hotel Boramar (which used to be pretty funky, but I think has gone upscale). All are close to the beach.
My first choice would be le Mas des Citronniers. I think they have AC.
Very easy to access by train.
